External wall insulation London Haringey
Fixing external wall insulation
There are several types of fixing system on the market, which will be specified on different manufacturers’systems. They can be broadly grouped into the following categories:
- Purely Bonded Systems – Adhesive is used to fix the insulation boards to the walls.
- Bonded Systems with Mechanical Fixings – The adhesive is the primary means by which the insulation bonds to the wall, whilst the fixings are fitted to add stability during drying and in the case of fire.
- Purely Mechanically Fixed Systems – The panels are fixed to the wall only using mechanical fixings and no adhesive is used to stick the panels to the wall.
- Mechanically Fixed System with Supplementary Adhesive – Whilst the load of the insulation is supported by the fixings alone, adhesive is still used on the boards to ensure a flat system.
Insulation Material
Expanded polystyrene and mineral wool are the two most commonly used materials for insulation work on external walls. Extruded polystyrene (XPS) is also used in situations where the wall is going to be exposed to more water than usual (below the DPC for example).
Render System
This refers to both the base coat with reinforcement mesh, the primer and the top coat. In some systems a paint will also be specified.
